How to prepare for an elegant family shoot
Last week I shared with you pictures from our family photo shoot, and today I’m going to share with you some tips on how to prepare for an elegant family shoot with your babies! Like most things, beautiful things take some planning. Here are some tips on how to prepare your next family photo shoot.
Choose a good photographer
I know this is an obvious important decision but here is how you can determine what is a good photographer. Our photographer has recently started his business ventures in Hong Kong with reasonable rates and incredible photography skills. You don’t need to choose a photographer who charge ridiculous price in order to receive great photos. You need someone who is passionate in what they do and also who can relate well to your kids! We were lucky because our photographer is a couple team and his wife who is also his assistant is the sweetest! She looks after our son when we were getting our couple shots, and also get Lucas to smile and make him feel relaxed. As a couple themselves, they also demonstrates how we can pose for sweet and loving photos.
Pick a theme
We went through Pinterest to get ideas and I created a board for all my favorite family photos. I am pretty sure I will come back to this board for more ideas as Lucas grows older or when our family grows bigger! So we set up a meeting a month before our shoot, we sat down and told our photographer what we wanted. I said I wanted my family photos to be classy and elegant. The next thing we did was to go over his portfolio and select our favorites from his past work so he knows what we are looking for. Our photographer then suggest the best locations around our area, give us photo ideas, and suggest the best time to shoot. Outdoor lighting is best during sunrise and sunset but sunrise is obviously not an option with a baby so we started at 3pm and got our best shots around sunset.
What to wear
I wanted my dream family photos to be soft and elegant with flowing fabrics. Without a doubt, I went over to my favorite retailers Net-A-Porter to choose the most affordable and re-wearable options. I don’t want to pay thousands for something I can only wear once. This separate top and skirt set is perfect because you can wear the tulle skirt with a sweater for a romantic look in winter and the top with a pair of jeans. I recommend a grey sweater for a chic look or white sweater for a romantic look.
For shoes, I chose the classic Romy 100 Silver Mirror Pumps and they were larger to fit so I picked 35.5 instead of my usual 36, they were so comfortable to walk in despite the long hour shoot.
Bring your favorite bouquet
We ordered an elegant classic white bouquet to go with our photos. We were very lucky because Lucas likes to play with flowers and it was a great distraction when he started getting impatient. Bouquet is always a good idea for timeless classic family photos.
Have fun with your loved ones
Don’t be afraid to show your photographer who you really are, so that they can capture the love through their lens. All in all, just be present and enjoy the time together as a family, let your photographer capture the emotions and true beauty of your family.
Take it easy
Taking family photos can be exhausting for the kids, take it easy and let him rest. Lucas fell asleep three times during our shoot, I have never seen him sleeping this much during a short few hours. Everyone was so understanding and given us the time to rest and feed whenever. I don’t feel any pressure of getting photos done at all. We were not charged extra either for over running our photo session. We were very lucky and we genuinely had a lovely time. Pressure free.
